What you need to know
Taking time off — away from your job — is vital to being at your best. We support this by offering ample time off for all kinds of situations.
Paid time off
The number of PTO days you’re entitled to is based on the applicable CBA and you have until the 30 of June each year to use them.
- 26 days for middle managers (quadri) and regular employees (impiegati)
- 30 days for executives (dirigenti)
Extra PTO
Due to the reduction of annual working time (Permessi retribuiti per riduzione dell'orario lavorativo), you may be entitled to extra PTO depending on your employment level.
Middle-managers (quadri) and regular employees (impiegati) who have 2 or more years of employment with PayPal are entitled to the following extra PTO days:
- 36 hours of extra PTO per year after 2 years
- 72 hours of extra PTO per year after 4 years
Check Workday (website accessible within PayPal firewall) to see if you’re eligible for extra PTO.
All employees (quadri, impiegati and dirigenti) can also receive 32 hours of PTO per year for former bank holidays (Permessi retribuiti in sostituzione di ex festività).
How PTO works
The PTO year runs from 1 January to 1 December.
In calculating your PTO, any PTO day taken will be deducted as 1,2 days from your standard PTO entitlement since the working week is regarded as 6 days.
Contact HR Hub if you have questions about your PTO (website accessible within PayPal firewall).
Carrying PTO forward
You should use at least two weeks of your PTO before the end of the year.
Any remaining PTO can be used within 18 months after the end of year in which your PTO was accrued.
For additional PTO (i.e., vacation P.A.R and P.I.R), there is no limit on the amount of days that you can carry over.
P.A.R
Middle-managers (quadri) and regular employees (impiegati) can carry over an unlimited amount of P.A.R into the next year, up to 6 months. Any days carried forward need to be used by 30 June of the next calendar year, or they will be paid out within July Payroll.
P.I.R
Dirigenti: You can carry over an unlimited amount of P.I.R into the next year, up to 12 months. Any days carried forward need to be used by 31 December of the next calendar year or they will be paid out within January Payroll.
Middle-manager (quadri) and regular employees (impiegati): You can carry over an unlimited amount of P.I.R into the next year, up to 6 months. Any days carried forward need to be used by 30 June of the next calendar year or they will be paid out within July Payroll.

Additional leaves of absence
Maternity leave
Maternity leave
If you are pregnant and request leave prior to the birth of the child, you are entitled to take up to 5 consecutive months of mandatory maternity leave.
Mandatory maternity leave is taken according to these conditions:
- The leave begins from the earliest of 2 months before the expected birth date and no later than 1 month before the expected date of birth. Medical certificate is required.
- The leave ends, at the earliest, 3 months after the actual birth date and no later than 4 months after the actual birth date. Medical certificate is required.
Premature and late births
Mandatory maternity leave must be a minimum of 5 months, even if the actual birth date occurs before the expected date.
If the actual birth date occurs after the expected birth date, maternity leave will include additional time to meet the minimum of 5 months.
If you are on mandatory maternity leave and wish to postpone returning to work, you may take parental leave as provided by the law and the NCLA.
Learn more on the Parental Leave page on HR Hub (website accessible within PayPal firewall).
Paternity leave
Paternity leave
If you become a father, you may receive a maximum of 5 paid days of paternity leave, which can be taken during the first 5 months following the child’s birth. You can also use an additional day from the mother's leave if previously agreed upon.
You will need to submit a copy of your child’s birth certificate or letter with expected due date with your Workday request.
Parental leave
Parental leave
You may take parental leave of up to 6 months (full-time) or 10 months (part-time) to care for your child during the first 12 years of his/her life.
You may request parental leave according to the following conditions:
- Upon completion of your mandatory maternity leave, you may request up to 6 months of parental leave — sequentially or spread out — after the maternity leave (optional maternity leave)
- A father can take a maximum of 6 months parental leave either sequentially or spread out
- A single parent can take a maximum of 10 months parental leave either sequentially or spread out
- The maximum period of the parental leave for both parents is increased to 11 months if the father requests to be absent from work for a period equal to at least 3 months, according to the NCLA
- Learn more on the parental leave page on HR Hub (website accessible within PayPal firewall)
Parental bonding leave
Parental bonding leave
All full-time and part-time employees may take parental bonding leave if you have:
- A baby and need to care for your newborn child
- A child placed with you for adoption or long-term (generally a year or more) foster care
Parental bonding leave gives you a minimum of 6 weeks of time off with 100% base pay.
This benefit is coordinated with all discretionary and / or statutory leave benefits that exist locally, such that the total period of paid leave available is no less than 6 weeks. Where local leave benefits exceed 6 weeks, but statutory pay is less than full pay, the employee is entitled to receive the difference between full pay and statutory pay. Where local leave benefits exceed six weeks at full pay, there will be no additional benefit.
Refer to the Bonding Leave Policy on HR Hub for more details (only accessible within the PayPal firewall).
