What you need to know
Taking time off — away from your job — is vital to being at your best. We support this by offering ample time off for all kinds of situations.
Paid time off
PayPal values your wellness and wants you to take care of yourself and others in a way that best addresses your needs. You’re entitled to 26 days of paid time off per year, which is calculated on a pro rata basis for part-time employees and those joining or leaving PayPal in the middle of the calendar year.
In the Netherlands, there’s a distinction between a legal and an extra legal amount of paid vacation days:
- If you work 40 hours a week, you’re entitled to a maximum of 20 days of paid vacation
- The extra legal amount of paid vacation days for full-time (40 hours a week) employees is 6 days
If you’re a full-time employee, you accrue vacation at a rate of 2,16 days per month worked (including those on probation):
Months worked from your hire date… | PTO days earned until the end of the calendar year… |
---|---|
1 month worked | 2,16 |
2 months worked | 4,32 |
3 months worked | 6,48 |
4 months worked | 8,64 |
5 months worked | 10,8 |
6 months worked | 12,96 |
7 months worked | 15,12 |
8 months worked | 17,28 |
9 months worked | 19,44 |
10 months worked | 21,6 |
11 months worked | 23,76 |
12 months worked | 26 |
You may carry forward vacation days as follows:
Legal Vacation: You may carry an unlimited amount of legal vacation into the next year. You must use any carry-forward days by 30 June of the next calendar year, or they will be forfeited.
Extra Legal Vacation: You may be able to carry over accrued PTO for up to 5 years under certain exceptional circumstances, such as a long-term occupational disability or maternity leave.

Leaves of absence
Take care of what’s most important to you: your family. PayPal offers a variety of paid and unpaid leaves of absence that allow you to take care of your loved ones. Please check the relevant Leaves of Absence policy to ensure you allow enough time for your notice. You can find additional information and guidelines for applying for leave through Workday on the Bridge (only accessible within the PayPal firewall).
Career break leave
Career break leave
Up to 1 year unpaid leave for a career break. Each request will be reviewed by HR Hub on a case-by-case basis.
Sick leave
Sick leave
PayPal's Sick Leave policy allows you to take time off work if you are unwell. Our benefits are built to support your short-term and long-term absences due to illness.
Time off: Use sick leave for a day or two off due to situational illness. This time off would not be used for more than 3 to 5 days off.
Leave of absence: If you know your sickness will cause you to be out for a prolonged period of time (more than a week), then use the Leave of Absence options. When you are ready to return to work, notify your manager to enter your return from Leave in Workday, and if needed, provide applicable documentation.
Short-term care leave
Short-term care leave
You may take up to 10 days of paid time off per year to care for an ill family member.
Long-term care leave
Long-term care leave
You may take a period of up to 18 months away from work to care for a loved one who is terminally ill or who requires long-term care. This leave is unpaid, but you may be able to work part-time so that you'll earn part of your income. You can reduce your working hours by 50% in a 12-week period. You’ll continue to accrue PTO days for the hours you work, but you won’t receive pension contributions from PayPal during this time. You may decide how you distribute your leave, as long as you’ve discussed it with PayPal. To apply, please request leave at least 2 weeks before your leave start date. PayPal may decline your request if your absence were to cause serious problems.
Maternity leave
Maternity leave
You are entitled to at least 16 weeks of paid maternity leave and can start your leave between 4 and 6 weeks before your due date.
The duration of your leave depends on the date your baby is born. Maternity leave must be taken in 1 consecutive period and cannot be split into parts. Your leave will not be extended in case of multiple births.
Once you have given birth, you are entitled to at least 10 weeks of leave. This is also the case if your baby is born later than expected.
For antenatal mandatory medical appointments, you receive 20 minutes of paid time off per day from your 3rd month of pregnancy until the beginning of your antenatal leave.
Paternity leave
Paternity leave
The following policy and guidelines are in accordance with Dutch legislation:
- An employee, who is the partner of the birth mother, is entitled to a week of paid paternity leave, which has to be taken within 4 weeks after the birth of the child
- In addition, eligible employees may also apply for Extended Paternity Leave (up to 5 weeks of unpaid leave), which could be taken in the first 6 months after the birth. Employees can claim their state benefit from the Labour Office (Uitvoeringsinstituut Werknemersverzekeringen, UWV) in return to cover the salary (the state benefit is capped at 70% of statutory daily wage).
- A birth certificate should be provided to PayPal
- Dates should be agreed upon with your immediate manager
Parental leave
Parental leave
If you have been employed by PayPal for at least 1 year, you may apply for unpaid parental leave. You may use parental leave to care for biological children, adopted children, foster children, and stepchildren. The child must be registered as your child and may not be older than 8 years.
Your working hours as stated in your employment contract form the basis for calculation of the number of parental leave hours to which you are entitled. If you decide to start working part-time during parental leave, then the remainder of your leave will be calculated based upon the new number of hours in your contract.
You are entitled to parental leave that totals 26 times your weekly working hours, with additional statutory information available on HR Hub (this page is only accessible within the PayPal firewall).
Adoption leave
Adoption leave
You are entitled to 6 weeks of fully paid adoption leave if you are newly matched with a child for adoption by an adoption agency. (Note: Adoption leave and pay is not available in circumstances where a child is not newly matched for adoption, e.g., where a stepparent adopts his / her partner's children.)
Your right to adoption leave will become effective 4 weeks prior to the first day of placement of the adoption child . You are required to take the 6 weeks within 26 weeks after the child has been adopted, and the leave can be taken as 6 consecutive weeks or in weekly blocks.
Parental bonding leave
Parental bonding leave
All full-time and part-time employees may take parental bonding leave if you have:
- A baby and need to care for your newborn child
- A child placed with you for adoption or long-term (generally a year or more) foster care
Parental bonding leave gives you a minimum of 6 weeks of time off with 100% base pay.
This benefit is coordinated with all discretionary and/or statutory leave benefits that exist locally, such that the total period of paid leave available is no less than 6 weeks. Where local leave benefits exceed 6 weeks, but statutory pay is less than full pay, the employee is entitled to receive the difference between full pay and statutory pay. Where local leave benefits exceed six weeks at full pay, there will be no additional benefit.
Refer to the Bonding Leave Policy on HR Hub for more details (only accessible within the PayPal firewall).
